Overview

Participating BTAA libraries have reached a three-year Read and Publish agreement with Wiley, a major step in collective action towards the consortium’s Big Collection initiative. This agreement begins on January 1, 2023 and runs through December 31, 2025.

Journal Access

The agreement extends the BTAA’s Wiley Online Database Model contract for another three years, allowing continued access to the complete portfolio of Wiley journals for participating libraries.

Open Access Publishing Opportunities

The agreement supports unlimited Open Access (OA) publishing in Wiley hybrid and gold OA journals, including those from Hindawi. Eligible corresponding authors from participating institutions may publish OA at no cost to themselves. To qualify for OA publishing, an article must be accepted in a Wiley hybrid journal or submitted to a Wiley gold or Hindawi journal during the term of the agreement, and responsible corresponding authors must identify themselves as affiliated with a participating BTAA institution. Authors retain their rights to their work under a Creative Commons license and articles are immediately open and available to anyone.

FAQ

I’m a corresponding author at a participating institution. What do I need to do to publish Open Access at no cost to me under this agreement?

The details of the process differ for Wiley hybrid, Wiley gold, and Hindawi journals.

For Wiley hybrid journals, you will use the Wiley submission system. Once your article has been accepted, upon logging into the Wiley Author Dashboard, you will see the option to make it OA. As part of Wiley’s OA request workflow, you must indicate your affiliation with a participating BTAA institution.

For Wiley gold journals, you will use the Wiley article submission system. At the time you submit your article, in the Article Publication Charge section, you must select “My institution or funder has an agreement with Wiley…” To indicate your affiliation with a participating BTAA institution, use Wiley’s Account Code Tool to find your institution’s Account Code, and then enter it into the submission form. You will receive an email confirming that if your article is accepted, it will be published OA at no cost to you.

For Hindawi journals, you will use the Hindawi submission system. At the time you submit the article, in the Manuscript & Author Details section, indicate your affiliation with a participating BTAA institution. Hindawi will forward this information to Wiley. You will receive an email from Wiley confirming that if your article is accepted, it will be published OA at no cost to you.

Is my accepted article eligible?

Eligible publications have a corresponding author from a participating BTAA institution, are primary research and review articles (which may include original articles, case studies, reviews, and short communications), and are accepted for publication in a Wiley hybrid journal or submitted and accepted to a Wiley gold or Hindawi journal during the term of the agreement.

Which Wiley journals are eligible?

All Wiley hybrid journals, Wiley gold journals, and Hindawi journals are eligible for this agreement.

How does Wiley define hybrid and gold journals?

Wiley’s hybrid journals are subscription-based journals that offer authors the option to publish their articles OA. Within a Wiley hybrid journal, some articles are OA, and some are restricted to subscribers. Wiley’s gold journals are fully Open Access journals. Within a Wiley gold OA journal, all articles are OA. This agreement covers publishing in both Wiley hybrid and gold journals.

Is there anything more I need to do if my work is made Open Access through this agreement?

It depends!  If you or any of your co-authors have funding from the US federal government or one of many other funders, you may have a requirement to share your article in a specific location.  Please ensure you follow your funder requirements to avoid jeopardizing future funding.

I’d like to publish in a journal not covered by this agreement. Why is that journal asking me to pay to make my work open access? Can the library pay my APC for that journal?

Many variables go into negotiating publishing agreements including whether publishers are willing to negotiate such an agreement, what publishers are willing to include, and who negotiates the agreement—some are negotiated on a consortial level, and others are locally negotiated.

BTAA negotiated this agreement with Wiley as part of the Big Collection initiative. BTAA or your library might still have a different agreement with the publisher of the journal of your choice.  Check out BTAA’s Open Scholarship Agreements, and contact your library for information about agreements your library may have negotiated outside of BTAA.
