The Big Ten Academic Alliance Academic Leadership Program (ALP) is a highly selective experience for senior faculty members and executive staff to gain the knowledge, skills, and awareness that will enable them to become effective and successful leaders, navigating the complexities of academic administration at major research universities.

ALP was established in 1989 and is a cornerstone initiative of the renowned  and a hallmark of the Big Ten Academic Alliance's commitment to advancing higher education. With more than 2,400 alumni, including university presidents, provosts, and deans, ALP has cultivated a lasting legacy of distinguished leaders.

Program Timeline

ALP is a year-long extensive leadership development program that includes the following:

  • One virtual orientation session
  • Three three-day seminars, rotating among Big Ten Academic Alliance universities

    Foundational and Contemporary Issues in U.S. Higher Education

  3. Seminar II:

    Internal and External Relationships

  4. Seminar III:

    Strategic Thinking and Action

Program Objectives

  • Build the knowledge and skills required for effective, ethical academic leadership
  • Reflect on their motivations, values, and leadership style
  • Explore the challenges, rewards, and opportunities of leading at research universities
  • Understand university organizational structures and fiscal stewardship
  • Deepen self-awareness and strengthen professional relationships with colleagues

Eligibility and Selection Process

  • Each member institution selects five Fellows annually to participate in ALP. For more information on the selection process at each institution, please contact the corresponding ALP Liaison.
  • Fellows are faculty or select executive-level professional staff who demonstrate emerging leadership potential.
  • Appointed for a one-year term, Fellows are expected to fully engage in all aspects of the program, including seminars, online sessions, and institution-specific activities.
