Since 2020, Admissions Directors from the prestigious Big Ten universities have joined forces to engage with over 20,000 potential students through a series of dynamic online events. These webinars, hosted by the Big Ten Academic Alliance, provide a unique opportunity for aspiring college students to explore the benefits of attending a Big Ten institution. These universities are some of the most sought-after choices globally, attracting over 650,000 applicants annually.

Bridging Gaps: A Global Reach

The Alliance's webinars are designed to increase access and availability for potential students who may not have the opportunity to attend traditional college fairs. These events cater to high school students, high school counselors, and transfer students, drawing attendees from across the United States and around the world. By providing direct access to advisors and detailed information about each institution's unique requirements and opportunities, the webinars help demystify the admissions process for all students.

Collaborating for the Greater Good

It may seem counter-intuitive that Admissions Directors from competing universities would work together, especially when they are hoping to attract students to their own schools. However, the directors recognize that introducing students to the many benefits of attending a Big Ten school is most important. By collaborating, they ensure that students receive comprehensive information and support, ultimately benefiting all institutions involved.

University of Maryland’s James B. Massey, Jr., Director of Undergraduate Admissions, and 2023-24's chair of the events, emphasizes the importance of the collective effort in enhancing accessibility. He states, "Through our collaboration as BTAA institutions, we are able to make a larger impact on countless students, families, school counselors, and community-based organizations (CBOs) that are all invested in student success. We conduct virtual webinars throughout the admission cycle, virtual and in-person programs for school counselors and CBOs, and recruitment activities throughout the year. We believe that these collaborative efforts are exceptionally beneficial for all and enhance our accessibility as a collective."

Spring 2024 Transfer Student Webinar: A Personal Experience

The recent Spring 2024 Transfer Student Webinar exemplified the BTAA’s commitment to supporting prospective students. Ashley Paola Ibanez, a student from Parkland Community College and a prospective transfer to the University of Illinois, shared her experience, emphasizing the event's impact on her transfer journey.

"Attending the Big Ten Academic Alliance Spring 2024 Transfer Student Webinar was both helpful and informative because it provided me valuable information about the transfer process of the Big Ten Academic Alliance universities. I had the chance to connect with advisors, ask questions, and take notes of important details," Ashley explained.

"Advisors also mentioned the application filling period, required exams, and housing information. In addition, they answered all the questions that I had and all those attending the webinar. I think this webinar was a great experience and helpful for my admission to Illinois," Ashley noted.
