In late April, seven of the CIC Senior Research Officers met with high-level representatives of DARPA (Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency) at its Washington, D.C., headquarters.
Invited by DARPA Director Dr. Regina Duncan, the Senior Research Officers listened to a presentation by Dr. Kaigham (Ken) J. Gabriel, DARPA Deputy Director. They also met with Dr. Alanna Mitchel, Special Assistant for Strategic Analysis.
DARPA is making significant changes in its relationships with research universities. It is modifying granting processes and plans to work more collaboratively with its university partners by taking a more active role before and during research programs.
The meeting's outcome is "a stronger relationship with a key federal funding agency," said Barbara McFadden Allen, CIC Director, who joined the Senior Research Officers in Washington. "It sets the stage for ongoing discussion."
The Senior Research Officers at the meeting included: R. Timothy Mulcahy, Vice President for Research, University of Minnesota; Don Levy, Vice President Research & National Laboratories, University of Chicago ; Ravi K. Iyer, Interim Vice Chancellor of Research, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign; Robert B. Schnabel, Interim Vice President for Research, Indiana University ; J. Ian Gray, Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies, Michigan State University; Stephen R. Forrest,Vice President for Research, University of Michigan; and Caroline C. Whitacre, Vice President for Research, Ohio State University.
