Community Arts and Cultural Event @ ALA
1100 Market Street
San Diego
Please join the Libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance in an evening of community arts, film, and dance at Park & Market in San Diego on the evening of June 28, 7:30 - 9:30pm. The event is free and open to the public. Here's the flyer for the event.
We will be screening a documentary produced by the Community Rejuvenation Project called Alice Street, an award-winning film about the creation of a four-story public art mural in the heart of downtown Oakland, CA. The painting of the wall, which is situated at a unique intersection where Chinese and Afro-Diasporic communities face the imminent threat of displacement and gentrification, became a rallying point for community pride and resistance. We’ll be joined by the film’s director along with artists and performers featured in the film.
The evening event will include:
A performance by dancers and drummers from Fua Dia Kongo, a nonprofit cultural arts organization dedicated to the preservation of Kongolese cultural legacies worldwide
Screening of the film
A panel with the director and the lead artist of the mural
About the Community Rejuvenation Project: CRP has emerged as one of the most prolific mural arts organizations in the East Bay, painting more than 100 murals since 2010. During that time, CRP has consistently broken new ground in aerosol traditions through innovative applications of media and collaborating with a diverse set of visual artists. Additionally, CRP’s mural work has led it to become a “pavement to policy” organization helping to develop new policy around blight mitigation and abatement strategies, and promote holistic community development centered around public murals, in partnership with community organizations, schools, businesses, and municipalities.
About Fua Dia Kongo: Fua Dia Kongo (Fua) is a nonprofit cultural arts organization dedicated to the preservation and promotion of Kongolese cultural legacies worldwide. Founded in 1977, by the late world-renowned master artist (Ta) Malonga Casquelourd, Fua’s artmaking is centered in the traditions of descendants of the Kongo Kingdom (modern-day Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo and Angola). With a renewed focus on global ambassadorship, research and cultural restoration, Fua Dia Kongo serves as a unifying force, safeguarding traditional art forms and reconnecting the descendants of the Kongo Kingdom across the globe.
About the event venue: Park and Market (1100 Market Street in San Diego) is owned by University of California-San Diego and operated jointly with several local community arts organizations. The BTAA Libraries are pleased to hold our annual event in this mission-aligned facility and to offer this cultural and community-focused to all.
