Libraries

The Libraries of the Big Ten Academic Alliance are aligned in the vision of uniting our separate collections into one collection, shared and fully networked: the BIG Collection. By this phrase we mean a holistic and comprehensive understanding of what a library "collection" is: not simply the things we hold, but our services; our people; our expertise; our technology; and our infrastructure.

In advancing this future of interdependence and excellence, we are guided by our North Star in everything that we do:

In order to advance a just, trustworthy, scalable & sustainable open knowledge ecosystem, make open, more equitable scholarship our lead purpose.

On these pages, you'll find more about the services, programs, and community that are advancing this vision in a principles-centered, mission-driven, values-aligned way.

An in-depth archive of documents related to poet Walt Whitman are among the treasures owned and housed in the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Center for Digital Research in the Humanities, but it could soon have a wider audience of students and scholars thanks to UNL joining the CIC, reports the Omaha World Herald.

The CIC is a founding member of the HathiTrust, a shared digital archive with more than 30 partner institutions. After UNL becomes a member of the CIC on July 1, 2011, it also will have access to the HathiTrust, which currently contains 6.7 million volumes -- and counting.

The World Herald spoke to Kim Armstrong, deputy director of the CIC Center for Library Initiatives, who told the newspaper that  “hopefully (the HathiTrust) would give (the Whitman archive) a higher visibility and higher use."
