The University of Michigan Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies Program, in conjunction with co-sponsoring units at Michigan and support from the CIC and the Asian American Studies Program of Ohio State University, invites applications from students for travel grants to present at a conference titled, “Out of the Margins: Asian American Movement Building.” It will take place March 25-26 on the campus of the University of Michigan.
This event will provide a unique gathering point for scholars and activists from the Midwest and beyond. We will discuss the history of Asian American activism, contemporary sites of struggle, and strategies for movement building. Invited speakers include leading figures from diverse intellectual backgrounds and Asian American community organizations. Sub-themes to be addressed include: transnational perspectives on movement building; youth organizing; cultural activism; immigrant rights; revolutionary theory; and the relationship between scholarship and activism.
Awards: Up to $1,000 in travel grants will be awarded in total.
Eligibility: Graduate and undergraduate students from CIC universities.
Deadline: Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis beginning February 13, 2011, and will close as soon as space on the program is filled.
Instructions:
a) Write a 250-word proposal for a 15-minute panel presentation. Explain your proposed topic and how it relates to the conference theme or sub-themes. Accepted proposals will be placed onto a moderated panel (with other scholarly or community activist participants) based on several themes (e.g. immigrant rights, the relationship between scholarship and activism).
b) Provide a budget outline. Eligible expenses include travel to/from Ann Arbor by car, bus, train, or plane; and hotel accommodations. Hotel rooms will be available for $47/night for single and $53/night for double. Conference registration will be free. Requests may not exceed $500.
(c) Applicants should state the times and dates that they are available to attend the conference and present their papers on March 25 and 26.
d) Include a short CV.
Note: Group presentations will be considered if multiple persons are collaborating on one 15-20 minute presentation. The total budget for the group should not exceed $500. Sorry, we cannot accommodate full panel proposals.
Please send your application as one PDF or Word file by email to: Scott Kurashige, Director of Asian/Pacific Islander American Studies, University of Michigan, kurashig@umich.edu. (Questions may also be directed to this address.)
