Federal requirements around research cybersecurity are growing quickly, and university
IT teams are increasingly the ones expected to put them into practice. This session
offers a plain-language introduction to that landscape: what the new requirements are
trying to accomplish, where things stand today, and why work that used to live in
research compliance offices is showing up in the systems IT teams build and support
every day. The conversation pairs a national policy perspective from EDUCAUSE with
practical resources from the research security community, plus a look at how IT,
security, and research offices can partner effectively.
 | Jarret Cummings, Senior Advisor for Policy and Government Relations, EDUCAUSE Jarret Cummings serves EDUCAUSE as Senior Advisor for Policy and Government Relations. In this role, he oversees association efforts to address federal policy issues with significant implications for higher education IT, particularly regarding information security and data privacy, IT accessibility, and networking and telecommunications. Cummings has been with EDUCAUSE since 2004, having previously worked as a federal policy specialist, special assistant to the president, and program administrator for the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI). He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Syracuse University and a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Southwestern University. |
 | Carolyn Ellis, Director, Research Cybersecurity and Compliance, Arizone State University Carolyn Ellis co-founded the Regulated Research Community of Practice (RRCoP) from Arizona State University and previously led regulated research programs at Purdue University and UC San Diego. Her research focuses on the intersections of research cybersecurity, leadership, cyberinfrastructure, community building, security, and compliance. Her current efforts include Trusted CI, the NSF Cybersecurity Center of Excellence; national research on NSPM-33 cybersecurity readiness; and privacy-enhancing technologies. |
 | Mike DiLalo, System Administrator, Center for Advanced Biotechnology and Medicine, Rutgers Health Mike DiLalo is a CISSP-certified System Administrator at CABM, where he leads systems administration, infrastructure, and technical projects supporting research and administrative operations. In addition to managing CABM’s core IT environment across Linux, Windows, and macOS platforms, he contributes to university-wide efforts focused on research security, cybersecurity compliance, regulated research data, identity and access management, and other shared technology services that support the Rutgers research enterprise. |
